We do kiteboarding lessons wherever the most suitable environment is for learning around St Petersburg and Tampa Bay. Our number one focus is your success and being in the right location will increase your ability to learn. Before determining the location we look at a few variables that play a part in the right environment for kiteboarding.
Wind Strength
We give lessons with consistent winds anywhere between 11-25mph. If the wind is too light, it is hard to keep the kite stable in the sky and this will hinder your ability to learn proper kite control. It’s important to create good habits from the beginning so you maintain safety and can progress faster. If the wind is too strong then it can become too dangerous to teach kite control. 11-25mph is ideal for teaching and it is very common for the Tampa Bay area to see this range of wind during season.
Wind Direction
We always look for a side shore or side onshore wind. Luckily St Petersburg is a peninsula so we can get out on almost any wind direction. The only two wind directions that don’t work well for our area is a N and NNE wind. This is because the wind comes straight from over St Petersburg and never goes across enough water to be clean and consistent.
Water Depth
We check the tides to make sure the water we teach in is knee to waist deep. We want it shallow enough for you to stand but not so shallow that you risk injury. Fortunately, most spots in St Petersburg are waist deep.
Hazards
There are always potential hazards no matter what spot you kiteboard at. We choose the spots with the least amount of hazards but will also spend time explaining what a potential hazard may be and how to avoid them. We teach you how to be a self sufficient kiteboarder so when you do travel to a new spot, you are able to recognize what a good spot is and how to be safe.
