There is so much flat and shallow water in Tampa Bay! That makes kiteboarding in Tampa Bay easy to adventure and explore. If you time the tides right, most places we kiteboard are only 1 ft to 3 ft deep!
Adventures Between Skyway and Fort Desoto
Some of the best places to explore are the flats between the west side of Skyway and East Beach Fort Desoto. There are literally miles of grass flats. You can kiteboard out and still be in a foot of water. If you know where to go, there are mangrove islands that are fun to explore around.
In the video above the wind was blowing out of the NW. The tide was between low and high tide. Wind speeds were between 15 kts and 22 kts. The kite used was a 10m Cabrinha FX. Here is a picture of the track that was followed by using an Apple Watch.
Downwinders are an excellent way to explore the flat waters between two places. If the wind is blowing in a certain direction, you park one car downwind and take the second car to a spot upwind. You rig a kite, launch and let the wind blow you downwind to the second car. One of our favorite downwinders in the Tampa Bay area is from Lassing Park to the east side of Skyway Bridge.

If you have a motorized watercraft you can get to some pretty cool islands. Most islands are only a few miles off the mainland so they are not difficult to get to. What you can experience on the islands are some of the best, secluded kite spots around Tampa Bay. It’s hard to get bored of kiteboarding in Tampa Bay with so many unique and awesome places to ride.
