Our favorite wind direction is southerly winds. We like warm and we like consistent wind speeds. When the wind is coming from the south, that typically means a front is above us. Before the front we experience warm and humid conditions, which, in the winter time is ideal.
South Winds
There’s a few nice trends to south winds throughout our windy season, from October through May. South winds are usually under forecasted for the St Petersburg area. If you see a forecast like in the image below, chances are the wind will be around 16 – 18 mph from 11am to about 3pm. South winds kick up from a thermal effect that happens when the land heats up. For this reason, these winds are super consistent and steady. If there’s a strong cold front to the north of us, expect a southerly wind two to three days before the front comes through. As the front gets closer, the south wind will increase in strength. Be careful the day the front comes through as storms will be prevalent and the conditions can rapidly change.

Spotting a South Wind
Keep checking Egmont Channel on the Ikitesurf app or website. Watch Baynews 9 and check out their forecast. If you see “breezy” and a big temperature drop, chances are the days before the temp drop will be south winds. For a good south wind, make sure its sunny for the thermal effect.
