February 27th Update
We have had time to ride and test some of the 2020 Cabrinha products. Click the links for specific reviews!

Over the past few weeks we’ve had the opportunity to study the Cabrinha Kites 2020 lineup, from what’s brand new to what has been upgraded, we even got to test some of the products out. Keep in mind that as we log more sessions on the Cabrinha 2020 products we will release more in-depth reviews, but to start here is an overview of what’s new to Cabrinha in 2020!
Key New Developments: 2020 Cabrinha Kites
- Nano Ripstop Canopy
- Modular Control System
- Redesigned Contra
- New Foils
Nano Ripstop Canopy
Each year kite materials improve so that kites last longer and perform better. The new Nano Ripstop Canopy material Cabrinha uses on their 2020 kites is a 55 g/m2 material with a 3mm double rip stop pattern. This micro rip stop material in unison with the newly developed coating, has given Cabrinha a 2X increase in the canopy’s tear strength.

The exclusive new coating has been engineered to deliver unprecedented durability and stability, giving you a crispier feel and increased canopy rigidity creating a higher performing kite.
In addition, the exclusive new coating has been engineered to deliver unprecedented durability and stability, giving your kite a crispier feel and increased canopy rigidity, which results in an overall higher performing kite.
The process is called Plasma treatment. Unique to Cabrinha’s exclusive Nano Ripstop Canopy, the plasma treatment creates a hydrophilic surface for superior adhesion of the coating onto the unfinished greige material.
What does this mean for you? Well, your kite will remain “crispy” for much longer and will be less likely to be cut up by shells or rocks.

Modular Control System
After listening to customers wants and needs, Cabrinha’s 2020 Control System has received a complete overhaul. This year, there are two main options, the traditional loop bar and the modular control bar. Each option then has availability of two different trim methods and two different bar sizes.
The brand new Cabrinha 2020 Modular Control System allows the rider the capability to customize their control bar any way they want it. Here’s three points on how:
1. Four Different Connection Methods
The modular control system gives you the ability to seamlessly interchange the harness connection options. You can choose between the traditional chicken loop, a freestyle loop, fireball or rope slider.

2. Two Different Trim Methods
The modular control system gives you the choice between the Trim Line Adjustment or the Recoil Trim Adjustment methods.
This system is all about the customers preference. The Trim Line Adjustment uses a cleat system to adjust the power/depower. The Recoil Trim Adjustment has made adjusting the power/depower easier for people with a shorter reach.
3. Bar Lengths
The modular control system is available in two overdrive models, medium and large. The medium bar is adjustable in bar length from 44cm to 52cm, while the large bar is adjustable in bar length from 52cm to 60cm.
The Overdrive System, or the way you change the bar lengths, has been upgraded for 2020. Cabrinha has simplified the adjustment and lightened it so that the “Overdrive” bar feels similar in weight to the fixed bar length from years past.

Redesigned: 2020 Cabrinha Contra
For 2020 the Cabrinha Contra has been upgraded, but we still have not had the opportunity to test ride this improved kite. After speaking with our Cabrinha representative, we’ve heard that Cabrinha was been able to modify the Contra to maintain the low-end power it is known for but also dramatically improved the high-end range as well. This improvement allows the rider to continue to feel comfortable while riding, even if the winds pick up. Therefore, for smaller riders who don’t necessarily need a big kite but prefer to ride powered, will also benefit from this aspect.
Another benefit of this new and improved range includes foilboarding. Foilboarders looking to get out in extreme lightwinds could also benefit from the capabilities of the Contra to depower. With foilboards, it’s easy to generate power and get over powered quickly, so a kite that can dump power is beneficial.
We’re excited to try this kite out, as we hear initially the 2020 Cabrinha Contra will feel the same, it will easily generate power so you can park and ride. But once riding, the 2020 upgrades will become noticeable including lighter bar pressure and faster turning.
Stay tuned! After testing it out, we’ll post back with our complete analysis.
New Foilboards
Finally, included within the 2020 Cabrinha products are the brand new foilboard series, providing multiple options for different styles of foil riding. The three new foils from Cabrinha are the Hi Rise Varial: Medium, Hi Rise Carve and AV8.
These foils were designed for specific disciplines and to perform the best in those categories. We love the Hi Rise Varial foil for everything from freeriding to teaching, even to ride behind a boat. The Carve is going to break free easier when turning. The AV8 is an all carbon, highly efficient and fast design to get racers on the podium.
For a better analysis we’re going to test these foils back to back. Stay tuned.
