There’s usually a week or two in January where we see exceptionally cold conditions. As a result of cooler conditions, we see more of the NNE wind direction but in February we see a warming trend.
If you’ve been waiting for it to warm up before learning how to kiteboard, now is the time to begin scheduling. See below for scheduling.
Wind Trend
Wind still comes mainly from cold fronts coming through. We’ll see southerly winds before the front and NW or NE winds after the cold front passes through. Towards the end of February we’ll see more sea breezes begin to develop.

Wind Direction
February is a warmer month than January so we’ll see more NW and NE winds after the cold fronts rather than the gustier NNW and NNE winds. In the mornings after a front, it’s common to see a NE wind and a NW wind in the afternoon.
Before the fronts come through, we see a S wind. The best time of day for southerly winds are from about 9am until 3pm. These winds are warm and consistent.

Overall Consensus
Tampa Bay begins to warm up while cold fronts that still come through are not quite as harsh. The wind we get is still predominantly from cold fronts, but towards the end of the month we’ll begin to see more sea breezes. Februarys a great time to get out and learn since March and April are warm and the wind is consistently good.
