This post will go over one of the techniques on how to water relaunch a kite in lightwinds. This technique will require a bar with a low “V”. A low “V” refers to the point where the center lines split. The center lines should split just above the trim system or the depower mainline. Practice this technique in shallow water and when the winds are 9-14mph. This technique can be applied to a deep water relaunch.
First Learning Water Relaunch in Lightwinds
Before attempting this technique, make sure to be proficient at normal water relaunches. Choose the right conditions to practice this technique. The ideal conditions should be in shallow water a safe distance from the beach. If the winds are strong or you feel moderate power from the harness, then you shouldn’t need this technique. This technique is for when there’s little wind and the kite does not respond to tension on the outside steering line.
Begin this technique by grabbing the outside steering line just below where the control bar lines meet the outside steering lines. With the same hand or with your other hand, grab the opposite center line one to two feet past the depower mainline.
The kite should drift deeper into the wind window. As it drifts deeper into the wind window, it will rotate on itself. As it rotates and becomes vertical, let go of the opposite center line.
Continue to hold the outside steering line and balance tension in that line to guide the kite up. At this point, you should only need a gentle amount of tension in the outside steering line to guide it up.
Apply This Technique in Deep Water
This technique can be applied in deep water where you might be drifting towards the kite. In this situation, you may feel like you have less power because you lose apparent wind as you drift towards the kite. Try to keep the board on your feet. With the board on your feet, position it against the kite. Keep the board on your feet and perform this technique.
If you lose the board, float on your stomach and perform this technique. This can be a difficult situation if you’re not comfortable water relaunching. Make sure to stay relaxed to feel the tension needed to guide the kite up. Practicing in shallow water will help towards being able to do this in deep water.
