March through June are a fantastic time for kiteboarding in St Petersburg. Warmer temperatures mean warmer waters. Generally, the wind during these months are reliable. Sea breezes can sometimes be difficult to read. A forecast may not reflect good winds until the day. That was the situation for this kiteboarding session here:
Sea Breezes
Sea breezes occur from changes in temperature. There are certain signs that make it easier to predict the strength of a sea breeze. Over the years of chasing the wind here in Tampa Bay, we’ve developed a good read on sea breeze patterns here. To keep it super simple, sea breezes will occur in the afternoon.
Good For Learning?
Sea breezes are fantastic for learning! These winds are super consistent meaning that they are not likely to experience large gusts. Some sea breezes are light (8-11 mph) and these sea breezes do not work for kiteboarding. Even an experienced kiteboarder will have trouble flying a kite in under 11 mph, even if it is a large kite. The ideal wind for kiteboarding is at least 11 mph. Over the next few months we can expect to get a lot of good sea breeze wind days.
